From Wikipedia: Mary Jane Seacole (1805 – 14 May 1881) was a Jamaican-born woman of Scottish and Creole descent who set up a 'British Hotel' behind the lines during the Crimean War, which she described as "a mess-table and comfortable quarters for sick and convalescent officers," and provided succour for wounded servicemen on the battlefield. She was posthumously awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit in 1991. In 2004 she was voted the greatest black Briton.

"Will This Do?"

"Will This Do?"
20 x 26
cotton floss on cotton toile

Made for the exhibition SUDDENNESS + CERTAINTY , curated by Robert Greene at the Robert Miller Gallery in NYC, 524 W 26th St.

Suddenness + Certainty is organized around selections from Greene’s body of work in conversation with numerous other artists’ works he admires ranging from historical, established and emerging figures.

Greene’s pieces are couched in a collage of other artworks with diverse textures, surfaces, symbols, and narratives, allowing for varying approaches and interpretations. It is a celebration of a pure experience of art: as an aesthetic egress, a heartfelt and transcendent encounter.

The show includes works by: Diane Arbus, Jules de Balincourt, Hernan Bas, Carol Bove, Daniel Buren, Scott Campbell, Carter, Wendell Castle, Justin Cole, David Deutsch, Johannes DeYoung and Natalie Westbrook, Simon Evans, Eve Fowler and Sam Gordon, Robert Greene, Joel Grey, Ernst Haas, Daniel Heidkamp, Yuichi Hibi, Matt Jones, Anya Kielar, Yayoi Kusama, Stephen Lack, Marie Lalanne, Gil Lipton, Sven Lukin, George Platt Lynes, Robert Mapplethorpe, Takesada Matsutani, Kim McCarty, Chris McCaw, John McCracken, Fausto Melotti, Shimon Minawikawa, Donald Moffett, Daido Moriyama, Ana Mouyis, Takuma Nakahira, Rachel O’Meara, Anthony Pearson, A.R.
